Cafe Susam
A favorite dinner from the trip was an evening spent at Cafe Susam. I was our first night in Istanbul, and although feeling the jet lag begin to creep in we battled through the sleepiness and ventured out. One reason we planned our trip for this time of year (other than airfare was insanely cheap) was because Lizzy’s sister Caroline and boyfriend were coming off of a year teaching English in South Korea and were in Istanbul having a reunion with a few of their best friends from college before heading back to the states. One of Caroline friends was named Sibel, she was a Turkish native and had moved back to Istanbul after they graduated college. Cafe Susam was one of Sibel’s favorite local hangouts so we trusted her opinion when she suggested it!

The restaurant is located on Susam Sokak (literally translated as Sesame Street) and is in the heart of the leafy Cihangir neighborhood. The atmosphere was the best for a casual relaxing dinner-an eclectic cafe filled with locals (we may have been the only speaking English in there that night) and mismatched furniture. Delicious food and conversation with such an interesting and amazing group of people. What a great way to start out our trip!
